Doane Experience 2011
Posted on 07. Dec, 2011 by admin.
The Doane Experience 2011 at Doane College Crete, Nebraska was a very creative week for the carving students in our fish carving class. All the fish were carved and air brushed with great attention to detail. Gary was pretty much on his own as
solo instructor,as I was part of the Doane Committee that organized the Event. Working with Rohn Collins, Leonard Stenneche, and Sherry LaTendresse made me realize the effort, hard work and dedication it takes to put on such an Event. What a Great Experience it was to meet so many carvers and instructors in such a relaxing setting. Thanks to all 300 hundred students and instructors who attended.

Doane 2010

What does counting fish scales, watching turtles , airbrushing, woodcarving and eating cookies have in common?
The answer: Doane 2010. The view from our classroom was spectacular; a window overlooked two small lakes, where large turtles were trolling the water’s edge. And while the scenery was a beautiful distraction, at least one of our students was intensely focused on his carving. Don Lund, a member of our class, started keeping track of how many fish scales he was burning on his Rainbow Trout. When the numbers were finally in, he counted 10,962. The class completed and mounted their Rainbow Trout with impressive skill and there was a definite sense of camaraderie there. A big thank-you goes to the Mid-America Woodcarving Association and the Doane Committee for helping to create another great Doane Experience!

The 33 Annual Doane Experience Workshop, included a Realistic Fish Woodcarving Class. This, our fourth year, we offered a class in carving and painting a Northern, Bass, Crappie or Bluegill.
Doane College, located near Lincoln NE ( Huskerland) has a lush wooded campus with ponds and fish to inspire any fish artisian. A new cafeteria, new classrooms and on going Dorm remolding has made the accommodations a great addition to a tradition in which 350 woodcarvers and 30 instructors participated in carving projects from fish carvings to mantle shelves. Other projects were included for non-carvers. Next years dates are set for July 25 – 31, 2010 when tentatively we are planning to teach a airbrushed Rainbow Trout.
